Center for Contemporary Printmaking

Center for Contemporary Printmaking is a non-profit, multi-media workshop and gallery devoted to the creation and exhibition of original prints,photographs, artist's books and paper works. It provides artists with first-rate studios, staff and equipment.

SUMMER WORKSHOPS
JUNE WORKSHOPS

The Paper Mill
The Paper Mill is available on Thursdays and by appointment to all who have an
interest in pursuing projects, editions, and paper made for specific needs.
Sessions include use of the studio and all equipment with a staff papermaker
present for technical assistance. Please call Anne McKeown to schedule.

Figure and Monotype
Tuesday, June 2, 9, 16 and 23; 10 AM - 1 PM
$125 for 4 sessions; $35 per single session if space permits.
Come and integrate the inspiration of the figure with the immediacy of the
monotype technique. Each session will have a model and workshop leader. Prior experience is not required, as technical assistance in printing will be available. You can paint your printing surface directly from the nude model. Limit: 8.

Photo - Plate Making
Wednesdays, June 3, 10, 17, and 24; 10 AM - 4 PM
$85 per session, plus $5 lab fee
$290 for 4 sessions plus $20 lab fee

James Reed
Four separate, one-day workshops will be offered to enable participants to
create different types of printmaking matrices utilising photographic imagery.
Instruction is focused solely on the application of a specific photographic
technique to various types of printmaking. Participants must have previous
experience in their chosen area of printing. All processes minimum toxicity.
Darkroom experience not necessary. Limit: 6.

Etching / Intaglio / Mixed Techniques.
10 weeks, Thursdays, June 4 - August 6, 6:30 - 9:30 PM
$350 plus $25 lab fee
Anthony Kirk
This course covers all aspects of intaglio printmaking: drypoint, etching,
aquatint, hard and soft ground and mixed techniques. Editioning, papers, ink
and color printing will be discussed. Artists have the opportunity of working
with Mr. Kirk to develop innovative techniques that serve individual needs.

Papermaking
Saturdays, June 13 and June 27, 10 AM - 4 PM $170 plus $20 lab fee
Pat Almonrode
Learn to make paper both at the Center and at home. We'll cover: fiber
selection and preparation, using recycled materials, coloring pulp, adding
elements for texture and color, constructing a simple mold and deckle, making
sheets, some 3-D applications, drying work and more. You can later rent studio
time to make sheets for drawing, printing and painting, stationery and book
covers. You'll also learn to set up a papermaking operation at home. This
workshop is limited to 8. More experienced papermakers can work on special
projects.

Intensive Drawing and Monotype Workshop
Monday - Wednesday, June 29 - July 1, 10 AM - 5 PM
$300 plus $15 lab fee
Monday, June 29, 7 PM, lecture.
$10 for those not attending the workshop.
Hugh O'Donnell
This three-day intensive workshop will focus on drawing into printmaking. The
workshop will facilitate the use of brush and ink to produce powerful images
incorporating a wide range of skills, encourage imaginative interpretation,
and provide guidance in bringing together painting and graphic skills toward
the resolution of complete brush drawings and printed monotypes.


JULY WORKSHOPS

Advanced Intensive Monotype
Monday - Friday, July 6 - 10, 10 AM - 4 PM
$350 plus $25 lab fee
Lisa Mackie
This intensive monotype workshop is for printmakers who have already
experimented with the monotype process. It will concentrate on experimentation
with ink formulas (both water- and oil-based), various plate surfaces, unusual
mark-making tools and chine colle techniques. The concept of matrix printing
will also be explored. The week will allow participants to thoroughly
investigate new techniques and incorporate them into their visual vocabulary.
It will be a week of intensive printmaking designed for artists who wish to
produce a serious body of work.

Collage Intensive & More

Collage Techniques and Creative Expression
Monday - Thursday, July 13 - 16, 9 AM - 5 PM
$400 plus $20 materials fee
Explore composition and the creation of a personal visual technique that
eliminates liquid adhesives from the collage-making process. Other topics
covered in this 4-day workshop include the paperless transfer of printed and
photocopied images using acrylic medium, tissue overlays, permanency of
materials, sources of tools, and substrates for small and large collages.
Prior experience not necessary. Limit: 12.

Creativity - Source, Process and Product
Monday, July 13, 9 AM - 5 PM
$85 (For 1-day registrants only)
The first day of the Collage Techniques and Creative Exploration workshop will
identify personal sources of creativity and develop new techniques for
accessing them. In addition, participants will learn how to avoid some of the
pitfalls which are built into the modern model of how artists function, define
our personal artistic goals, and develop a plan for their realization.

Wrapping It Up! - The Professional Approach
Friday, July 17, 9 AM - 5 PM
$85
Presentation, Pricing and Public Relations will be the focus of this day.
Discover new ways to help your work reach its audience. Explore strategies for
establishing and maintaining successful gallery relationships. Examine the
issues surrounding pricing of your work. Also, matting, framing, shipping,
insurance, etc.

Mixed Media Printmaking
Monday - Friday, July 27 - July 31, 10 AM - 4 PM
$350 plus $25 lab fee
Shelley Thorstensen
This workshop is intended to help participants employ an individualized
combination of print mediums and discover the world of possibilities in
combining them. Technical issues, such as registration between mediums,
compatibility of inks and tools, color densities, differences in viscosity,
and a treasure trove of no-nonsense how-to's will be covered. There will also
be an in-depth analysis of each participant's working process, personal goals
and aesthetic. A working understanding in at least one print medium will be
helpful — be it monoprint, etching, woodcut, screenprint, xerography,
rubber stamps, etc. The structure of this workshop will be individually based,
and is designed for those who want their prints to be something more.

New Technique - Silicone Intaglio
Monday - Friday, July 20 - 24, 10 AM - 4 PM
$350 plus $25 lab fee
Dale Bradley
The workshop will challenge participants with the possibilities of producing
richly layered black & ; white and color prints using a versatile new
printmaking technique developed by Mr. Bradley. Artists will be able to
create a plate that can be manipulated in a variety of ways, hand-tooled or
photo-etched in a fraction of the time that it takes to make a traditional
etching plate. Acidless etching is a simple, one-step process that is safe and
fast. It permits artists to combine non-darkroom transfer techniques with work
done directly on the plate which is easy to cut. Participants will be
encouraged to produce multiple color prints using this process alone or
incorporating it with other mediums.

AUGUST WORKSHOPS

Artist Books: Image, Text and Material
Monday - Friday, August 3 - 7, 10 AM - 4 PM
$350 plus $25 lab fee
Robbin Silverberg
The book offers possibilities of sequence, rhythm and timing in an intimate
and engaging format and is an effective structure for presenting creative
ideas. An artist book will be designed and developed, then produced.
Papermaking and its role in the book artist's visual language will be
explored, with each participant producing the paper needed while xperimenting
with basic techniques. Next, using the Vandercook press, letterpress will be
covered and a simple text printed. Finally, participants will bind and collate
their books. By examining a variety of books and experimenting with various
bindings, this workshop will expand the vocabulary of the artist book.

Material Magic and Process Possibilities
Monday - Friday, August 10 - 14, 10 AM - 4 PM
$350 plus $25 lab fee
Robert Dancik
This workshop is designed for artists in all disciplines who are interested in
alternate ways of creating art. We will explore using non-traditional
materials and techniques as well as traditional materials in non-traditional
ways. We will cover several ways in which diverse media can be combined to
ensure permanence while allowing maximum expressive possibilities. Areas
covered will include, but not be limited to: polymer clays, papers and papier-mache, plastics, concrete, PVC, adhesives, mechanical joining, etching and the use of heat for forming various materials. This workshop is for painters,
printmakers, teachers and art therapists. Limit: 8.

Relief and Monoprint for Painters
Monday - Friday, August 17 - 21, 10 AM - 4 PM
$350 plus $25 lab fee
Donna Moran
This workshop will explore the linoleum, woodcut and monoprint techniques as
it applies to painters. Materials used to print on can be paper, canvas or any
surface that interests the painter. We will explore the graphic possibilities
of the mediums and the many different ways that images can be printed. This is
not an edition class
all the techniques will be approached as a painter
would consider the canvas.

Local accommodations are available at reduced rates. Call for information.

Visiting Artists

Staff Printers
James Reed is a master printer who has been associated with several major
workshops. He was a lithographer for the Tamarind Workshop and has taught at
several universities. His work is represented in major collections. He is
currently printing editions at the Center.

Anne Q. McKeown, a painter printmaker, received her MFA from Yale University. She has taught both painting and printmaking and has exhibited extensively throughout the metropolitan area, participating in both solo and group
exhibitions. She has received numerous prestigious awards and commissions.

Pat Almonrode is studio manager at Dieu Donne Papermill, NY, and is a working lithographer and papermaker. He has taught at the Printmaking Workshop, NY, and served as master printer there. He has a BA from the University of Dallas and an MFA from the University of Minnesota. He has exhibited widely.

Dale Bradley is Director of the Bradley Etching Studio and former director of
printmaking at the Contemporary Arts Center. He teaches the Silicone Intaglio
process which he developed at colleges and universities and is writing a book
on the subject. His works are in many collections.Robert Dancik is a
professinal artist / jeweler / sculptor / educator who has exhibitions in
major galleries and is represented in numerous museums and private
collections. He has taught art for more than twenty years and conducted
workshops at major arts centers including the Penland School of Crafts.

Anthony Kirk is currently head of the etching department at Tyler Graphics. He
is a master printer and has collaborated with major American artists. He has
taught at several universities.

Lisa Mackie heads a print workshop under her name. She has been a visiting
professor at NYU, Cooper Union, RIT and Rutgers University. She is a master
printer whose work is in numerous collections including the Baltimore Museum
and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Donna Moran teaches printmaking at Parsons School of Design, NY, and Pratt
Institute, Brooklyn. Her prints have been exhibited in solo and group shows
worldwide and are in numerous private and public collections.

Hugh O'donnell is an internationally recognized artist. He has taught
extensively and is currently Director and Professor of Painting, School for
the Arts, Boston University. He is a visiting critic to colleges of art nationwide and gives pecialized master class workshops and lectures in the US
and the UK.

Robbin Silverberg, Director of Dobbin Mill / Dobbin Books, NYC, is both a book artist and papermaker. She works on solo bookworks, large paper installations and artist book collaborations. She exhibits and teaches in the US and Europe.

Jonathan Talbot has exhibited at the National Academy and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His works are included in museum collections in the US and Europe and he has presented workshops nationwide. His innovative techniques are discussed in Collage Techniques (Watson Guptill, 1994).

Shelly Thorstensen, MFA Tyler School of Art, BFA Syracuse University, has
taught at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Rutgers University, Tyler
School of Art and Marywood College. She exhibits nationally and was the
recipient of the F. Lammot Belin Art Scholarship award.

Exhibitions

April 27 - June 27, First Acquisitions, a selection of prints, posters,
drawings and artists' books drawn from the Center's collection assembled by
Andrew Stasik. The generous donors, who include artists, collectors and
dealers, have enabled us to launch into establishing the Center as a unique "
working" graphic arts museum.

We look forward to receiving additional important 20th century prints, drawings and other works on paper. A checklist of the Center's collection is presently being prepared.

July 11 - September 5, Prints from the Royal Society of Painters-Printmakers,
London. Joe Winkelman, printmaker and former President of the Royal Society
will speak at a reception on Sunday, August 2.

This fall, A Retrospective of Armen Landeck's Prints from the collection of
Anthony Kirk, who printed several of the artist's plates, will be exhibited.

Artists' Projects Artists may work independently or with the Center's printers
for special projects. Assistance is also available in book creation, one-to-
one and group collaborations, and printing for poets and writers. Innovative
approaches are encouraged. Contact James Reed.

Edition Printing All printmakers or artists in other disciplines can work
with the master printer for contract printing of lithographs, etchings,
silkscreen and mixed media. Contact James Reed.

Monotype Printing One or two artists at a time can arrange to work in the
studio to produce monotypes with set up, clean-up and printing provided by
resident printmaker, Anne McKeown. Call her to arrange.

Work / Study Program A limited number of work/study positions are available
for those who cannot afford to pay for workshops and studio time. Artists can
forego the fees by working a pre-set number of hours. For an application to
work/study, contact Michael Costello.

Internship Program The Internship Program is designed to provide hands-on
training in gallery management and/or printmaking techniques. Participants
receive a comprehensive overview of a non-profit graphic arts center as they
take workshops and use the studio in exchange for work. Contact James Reed.

Studio Rental Members of the Center may rent studio and darkroom space at $7
per hour or $40 per day, except during scheduled workshop hours. Groups can
have exclusive use of one studio for the day for a fee of $125 by appointment.
Open studio hours will be posted each week. It is advisable to check on
availability prior to arrival. The Center is also open Wednesday and Thursday
evenings from 6:30- 9:30 PM.

The Center is located in a beautiful, renovated 19th century stone carriage
house situated in Mathews Park, surrounding the historic Lockwood-Mathews
Mansion Museum near Norwalk's extraordinary harbor and Long Island Sound as well as the Maritime Center.

Travel time to the Center is about one hour from New York and one-half hour from New Haven, providing easy access to museums and galleries.

From lnterstate 95. take Exit 15 southbound, Exit 14 northbound, about 1/2
mile north to 299 West Avenue. The South Norwalk train station is only a short
distance by bus or taxi. The Center maintains a list of nearby accommodations
and through the Coastal Fairfield County Convention and Visitor Bureau, we can
offer artists special rates upon request.

Assisted Workshop — Thursdays, 10 am _ 4 pm, $10 per hour.
One of the Center's resident printers will be in the studio to provide
technical assistance. No instruction provided.

Center for Contemporary Printmaking is a non-profit multi-media workshop and
gallery devoted to the creation and exhibition of original prints,
photographs, artists books, paper works, and related disciplines. It provides
artists with excellent new facilities and makes available the best technical
expertise and equipment.

Nationally recognized printmakers conduct rich and diverse offerings of day and evening workshops.

Artists may also work independently or collaborate with master printers.

Major exhibitions of historical and contemporary prints and educational programs are also presented.

The workshops are fully equipped with a hydraulic press, several
intaglio and lithographic presses, a Vandercook press, an acid room,
silkscreen facilities, a papermaking mill, a black and white photography
darkroom, and an exposure table for photo-printmaking.

A staff member is available to assist artists in the use of the equipment.

The Center is located in a beautiful renovated 19th century stone carriage house on the grounds of the historic Lockwood-Mathews Mansion near Norwalk Harbor and Long Island Sound and the Maritime Aquarium.
