The Ottawa School of Art

New Approaches to Etching

The Ottawa School of Art is pleased to announce an intensive etching workshop which will be held in the month of August. "New Approaches to Etching" will be presented by Mr. Jack Cowin, a full professor in printmaking at the University of Regina (Saskatchewan). Mr. Cowin has been involved in printmaking for over 30 years as a professional artist and art instructor. He holds a BFA (printmaking) from Indiana University and an MFA (printmaking & painting) from the University of Illinois. He also holds a Masters degree in Medical Illustration and is a member of the Guild of Smithsonian Illustrators.

Mr. Cowin will share his vast experience and expertise in the course which will cover a variety of new techniques and new approaches to familiar techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the safety and effectiveness of these techniques.

Key topics covered in the workshop will include: (among others)

  • superior softground techniques
  • new approaches to aquatint
  • safe methods of photocopy transfer
  • etching on steel
  • hand-colouring prints and editions
  • monoprints using watercolours and water-based media.

Students will work primarily on copper plates. Some understanding and experience in printmaking, particularly etching, is recommended.

  • Tuition: $165 (includes some materials)
  • Limited space is available (maximum 15 students).
