Etchings with Woodcut & Watercolour
by FRANS WESSELMAN, R.E.

Jonah - Etching with woodcutFrans works very much in the Dutch tradition - he delights in detail, pattern and colour, whether his imagery concentrates on the natural world or on his new area of interest, people.

Frans etchings are enriched by the use of colour woodcut. He has broadened his horizons, as all good artists must, not only to include people, but to focus on water as an elemental theme that flows through his new work.

What's more, Frans has devised a new print technique, perfectly suited to convey his delight in detail and achieving a greater depth of colour than his multi-plate etchings. He makes an etching for the intricate line work and then builds up a rich luminosity of colour with woodcut - somewhat reminiscent of Hokusai. There will be about thirty of these new combination prints.

The themes illustrate dramatic episodes from mythology, Shakespeare and the Bible. Oberon and Titania, Macbeth and the three witches, Othello, Little Red Riding Hood and a set of four etchings depicting the naughty bits from the Canterbury Tales!
